Kogatei
Set in an exquisite Western-style building, this restaurant has one foot in Kamakura and one in France
Set in spacious grounds of lush green in the much-loved Kamakura area, Kogatei is a two beautiful western-style two-storey building completed in 1916. Designed by Shōtarō Sakurai who trained under Josiah Conder, the architect famous for designing Tokyo’s Rokumeikan, the Kogatei was reserved for a long time for private use, used by Japanese prime ministers throughout history as a holiday cottage. In 2015, it finally opened its doors to the public as a restaurant.
These days, Kogatei boasts an effortlessly glorious interior that brings a twist of contemporary style to the original fittings and classical ambience. Diners rave about the refreshing, creative take on French cuisine the restaurant offers, which incorporates fresh seafood from Sagami Bay and Kamakura vegetables, and provides a treat for the eye as well as the tastebuds. There is never a dull evening in this peerless gem of a restaurant.
